Think in Systems
These are 10 mental models that turn operators into architects.
02 Why this one exists
Most founders are operators trapped inside their own businesses.
An operator reacts and an architect designs. An operator solves the problem in front of him today, and an architect designs out the problem that would have arrived tomorrow. Most founders never make that shift, and the business slowly becomes a sophisticated job they cannot leave.
You can usually feel it before you can name it. There are decisions reaching you that you should not be making at all. There are problems that keep coming back wearing a slightly different shape. There is a team that waits to be told instead of running ahead. And there is a founder who is tired, indispensable and quietly stuck.
This session is for the founder who wants to think differently about the business so that he can stop running it and start designing it.
03 What you leave with
What you will leave with.
- 01A clear model that separates the role of the operator from the role of the architect, and an honest reading of which one you are currently playing.
- 0210 mental models that the best business builders use to see a business as one connected thing rather than a pile of tasks.
- 03A diagnostic exercise where you map how your own business actually flows and find the one blockage that is costing you the most.
- 04A simple way of turning all of that into decisions you can make on Monday morning.
04 The 10 stages
These are the 10 mental models.
- 01First principles thinking
- 02Stocks and flows
- 03Feedback loops
- 04Delays
- 05Leverage points
- 06Second order thinking
- 07Inversion
- 08Margin of safety
- 09Probabilistic thinking
- 10The map is not the territory
05 How the session moves
This is how the session moves.
- 01TeachThe mental model is introduced clearly.
- 02ApplyYou take it straight to your own business and work it through.
- 03ShareYou put what you found in front of the room, and the other founders pressure test your thinking.
You will not leave with a worksheet of frameworks you may or may not use. You will leave with answers about your own business, written down, and tested against other founders in the room.
06 Who should sit in the room
Who this is for.
- 01Founders whose business has outgrown their ability to hold all of it in their head.
- 02Founders who suspect they are running the business when they should be designing it.
- 03Founders who want to think differently before they restructure anything.
If your problem is execution discipline, this is not the right place to start. If your problem is that you no longer know how to think about your own business, this is exactly what it was built for.
