02 The story behind the work
I came to Chennai in 2004 and worked in a few jobs before I found my way into the knowledge industry. I freelanced for a while, then went out on my own, and in 2008 I started a training company.
In 2017 a client put a chequebook on the table and asked me to coach his business full time. I have been coaching ever since. I did not decide to become a business coach. The market made me one, and I have been working since then to become the best one in the industry.
I started my first business at 19. There was no business family behind me and there was no safety net under me. I have made payroll in months when the money was not there, and I know what that pressure does to a founder because I have felt it myself.
Then I added the credentials. An MBA in International Trade and Finance, so that I understand how a business earns and where its money goes. An M.Sc in Applied Psychology with 2 years of clinical training under practising psychologists, so that I understand what is happening inside you while you run the business.
Most coaches understand businesses. Very few of them understand the founder who is running the business. I do both, and most coaches stop at one of the 4 things in the next section.
I have sat where you are sitting.
The MBA in International Trade and Finance means that I understand how the business earns and where the money goes, without you having to explain it to me. The M.Sc in Applied Psychology, with 2 years of clinical training behind it, means that I can read you. And I have been an entrepreneur since I was 19, which means I have sat in the chair you are sitting in and I have made the expensive mistakes myself.
Most coaches have one of those. The advice from a coach who has one of them is usually correct, and it usually does not stick. That is not a failure of effort on anybody's part. It is structural, because the person giving the advice could only see part of the picture.
